Recycling Wireless Phones in Honor of Earth Day Can Help Preserve Environment Across the Carolinas and Tennessee
GREENVILLE, S.C., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Numerous events and efforts will be taking place across the Carolinas and Tennessee this month in honor of Earth Day. One very easy, yet Earth-friendly activity for conservation- conscious citizens is to recycle outdated or unused wireless phones.
Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, makes this effort simple for South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee residents with phone collection boxes at all 87 retail locations across the state (store listings below). Phones from any carrier, in any condition, will be accepted -- and donations are tax deductible. Last year, the company collected more than 900,000 wireless phones nationwide for recycling. While Earth Day falls on April 22nd, recycling of phones through Verizon Wireless continues year-round.
"Reducing the number of phones being dumped into our landfills has tremendous environmental benefits," said Jerry Fountain, Verizon Wireless Carolinas/Tennessee Region President. "We hope citizens will join us in this effort to preserve our natural resources here and around our planet."
It is estimated that more than 1 million wireless phones will be discarded in the Carolinas and Tennessee this year alone as users buy new models. Most of these phones -- and their batteries, which may contain harmful components -- end up in landfills unless disposed of properly.
In addition to the environmental benefits, many of the collected phones will be refurbished and donated, along with free airtime and cash contributions, to domestic violence shelters and agencies in the Carolinas and Tennessee through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine(SM) program.
During the first quarter of 2004, Verizon Wireless provided more than a quarter of a million dollars in cash and services to local agencies in the Carolinas and Tennessee. Old phones are refurbished and given to shelters for distribution to victims, recycled or sold with all proceeds going to the HopeLine program for distribution to organizations dedicated to stopping domestic violence.
Nationwide last year, phones donated for recycling helped Verizon Wireless provide more than $2.3 million in monetary and other contributions to domestic violence shelters and advocacy organizations. Initiatives in 2003 included educational programs, clothing, school supply and personal item drives, as well as the coordination of special programs -- including the production of an anti-dating-violence video for Spanish-speaking teens -- to help raise awareness of domestic violence.
