The Orlando Sentinel, Fla., Chris Cobbs column: Little things can mean the most sometimes
(Orlando Sentinel, The (FL) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Aug. 26--The Nokia Internet Tablet brings a new level of portability to broadband wireless Internet access.
The Tablet seeks to fill the gap between laptops and cell phones by offering a moderate-size screen in a device weighing only 8.1 ounces.
It remains to be seen if the concept is too specialized to generate mega-sales. But, hey, nobody really foresaw how the iPod would be a runaway hit, either.
Capitalizing on that mass-market popularity, creative developers have launched hundreds of nifty add-ons for the iPod.
A couple of products from Targus illustrate the range of accessories for the portable music player -- a locking device for security and a dual-function gadget to play iPod tunes over a car radio and provide wireless remote capability.
NOKIA INTERNET TABLET
Slip this little gizmo out of your bag, and prepare to be peppered with "What's that?" and other questions. The Nokia Internet Tablet brings the sizzle of Wi-Fi Web access to a device that's comfortable to hold in one hand. The Tablet's widescreen display packs nearly twice the resolution (800 by 480 pixels) of most cell phones, but text can be so tiny, it's nearly unreadable. Enlarging the font means more scrolling. A slide-on metal sheath protects the screen when the Tablet isn't in use. Price: $349.99
SPRINT PCS VISION PHONE KATANA BY SANYO
Rivals haven't missed many opportunities to clone look-alikes of the Motorola Razr. The Katana by Sanyo offers the requisite slender dimensions and sturdy good looks to hold its own with the Razr. This 3.4-ounce phone is available in four colors -- black, blue, pink and white. But it doesn't offer any killer features that set it apart from the Razr. Price: $79.99
TARGUS REMOTE TUNES TX FOR IPOD NANO
The Remote Tunes TX allows a user to control an iPod nano wirelessly within a 100-foot range. The 1.5-ounce device controls volume, tracks, creation of playlists, play, pause, on/off and sleep. It also extends the musical powers of the nano to transmit music through a car's FM radio system. FM frequencies are shown on the nano screen, and there are four programmable FM memory presets. Price: $79.99
TARGUS MOBILE SECURITY LOCK FOR IPOD
iPod fans will appreciate the security of being able to leave the device on a desk or table without fear of theft. The Targus Mobile Security Lock attaches via the iPod dock connector. A keyless, three-digit combination locks and unlocks the device, which has a retractable cable that can wrap around, for example, a table leg. Price: $29.99Technology Focus is moving
