Province of British Columbia: British Columbia's Sheriffs Mark 35 Years Of Service

VICTORIA, Oct 14, 2009 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The 35th anniversary of the creation of B.C. sheriff services is being recognized by Attorney General Michael de Jong, QC, during Sheriff Week in British Columbia, Oct. 10 to 16.

'B.C. sheriffs have a long and proud tradition of serving the public, and the Province recognizes and values their contributions,' said de Jong.' 'I would like to thank our sheriffs for the protective services they provide to court users and the assistance they give judges and court staff in their daily work.' 'B.C.'s sheriff service has almost 500 members, who ensure the safety and security of court users in 45 courthouses and 44 circuit court locations across the province, day in and day out,' said executive director Dave Maedel, executive director of sheriff services. 'They do a great job and deserve this recognition for their hard work.' Sheriffs have had a role in B.C. since 1856 and precede the creation of an organized police force. The B.C. sheriff service was formed in 1973.

During the anniversary event, Lt.-Gov. Steven L. Point presented 37 sheriffs with Peace Officer Exemplary Service medals. The medals recognize people in high-risk professions who have dedicated themselves to preserving public safety through long and outstanding service. The national medal, created in 2004, is one of the highest honours a sheriff can receive. Sixty-nine B.C. sheriffs received the medal this year.
