CBP Officers Arrest Port Runner in Laredo

Laredo, Texas -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers this morning apprehended a man who raced beyond the primary inspection area at the Lincoln-Juarez International Bridge and crashed into a nearby barricade.
The incident occurred early this morning when a male U.S. citizen and driver of a northbound pick-up truck drove through a closed primary lane, breaking a wooden barrier. The vehicle later struck a bus and slammed into a guardrail. The driver fled on foot.
CBP officers, assisted by Laredo police officers gave chase, apprehended the driver and returned him to the port. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents investigated the case with the collaboration of the Laredo Police Department. The driver faces federal port running charges and state charges for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. No one was injured in connection with this incident.
"People who engage in 'port running' face serious consequences for their actions, including both civil and criminal penalties," said Gene Garza, port director in Laredo. "A civil penalty of at least $5,000 and up to $10,000 may be levied, the vehicle may be seized, and individuals also may face criminal prosecution."
