The Honeybaked Ham and Specialty Foods, Catering and Cafe

Nov 20, 2009 (The Frederick News-Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The HoneyBaked Ham Cafe is a specialized meat store, but is also serves great cafe sandwiches that you can eat in or carry out. My restaurant adventure this time took me to The HoneyBaked Ham Cafe here in Frederick , located in the strip mall by the ToysRus off the Golden Mile.

I took my co-worker and cohort in crime, Jerry, with me for a lunch on a recent Thursday around 12:30 p.m., maybe a little later. We were the only two customers at that time.

As they do a very large carryout and delivery business, the cafe is smallish, with three tables centrally located and two taller tables at the front window. But, gosh it smelled so good, just like coming home to Sunday dinner with mom roasting something delicious in the oven.

This restaurant not only serves the lunch and early dinner crowd, they also cater. They offer box lunches or you can order a large spread -- hams and turkeys fully prepared are available to purchase along with side dishes and desserts. And for the large group you can go online and print out a form and fax your order in or reserve your order online and pick it up, or they will deliver. Now, I call that convenience.

Jerry and I ate in, and ordered off the menu.

Known for catering and box lunches, the Honeybaked cafes also focus on dining in a fast-casual setting, serving an assortment of cafe-style sandwiches, soups, salads, cookies and pastries, as well as upscale coffees.

I decided on the Doris' Special which is turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato, with ranch dressing, served with a bag of chips and a pickle. If I ordered a box lunch, I would have gotten a brownie. Jerry ordered the soup and a chicken cordon bleu sandwich. With drinks, our bill came to $18.82.

The sandwiches were packed with meat, moist and tender slices of turkey and chicken, the bacon crisp and flavorful, the lettuce and tomato fresh and tasty.

The soups are made fresh each morning and selections usually include split pea with ham, of course, creamy potato with ham, white bean, bean medley with ham, tomato bisque and creamy chicken noodle. Jerry enjoyed his bean medley with ham soup, a more flavorful mix than traditional northern white bean with the addition of green and yellow peas, onions, savory spices and big chunks of tender ham.

Other sandwich choices included prime roast beef, chicken salad, Mediterranean veggie, as well as a variety of ham, chicken and turkey combinations -- all made to order on fresh ciabatta rolls, bakery rolls or multigrain bread.

Honeybaked Ham also sells full, half, boneless hams, turkey breast, whole turkeys, barbecue pork roast and baby back ribs. They will also help in fundraising, by selling ham or turkey at a reduced rate, for the organization to fix up the sandwiches themselves.

The cafe also sells a variety of salsas, dried soup mixes, mustard and horseradish sauces, with different intensities of heat available. The heat and serve side dishes come in two sizes regular (which serves 2 to 3) at $4.99 and large (serves 6 to 8) at $7.99 and there is a lot of variety to choose from, garlic mashed potatoes, potatoes au gratin, sweet potato souffle, broccoli rice casserole, cinnamon apples, green bean casserole, macaroni and cheese, cornbread dressing, turkey gravy. Desserts range from $8.99 for a southern pecan pie to a large sampler cheese cake at $26.99.

We both agreed the food was terrific, and we would be back.
