Kentucky American Water Awards Ripple Effect Scholarship to High School Seniors for 10th Consecutive Year

Kentucky American Water has awarded Ripple Effect Scholarships to three Kentucky high school seniors for their academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to the environment, marking the tenth year the company has offered the scholarship program. The 2012 recipients are Madison Gilinsky and Seham Aldabbagh of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington, and Haley Flannery of George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester. Each student receives a $500 award from the company for use at a higher education institution.

This year's Ripple Effect Scholarship recipients have demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship through activities such as coordinating recycling programs at their respective schools and participating in other community environmental efforts.

"During the past 10 years, Kentucky American Water has recognized through the Ripple Effect Scholarship program the efforts of more than 70 students who had a desire not only to excel in the classroom butalso to use their time and talent to make their communities better places to live; that is, to have a 'ripple effect,'" said Cheryl Norton, president of Kentucky American Water. "For some, that meant creating recycling programs where there had been none. For others, it meant making improvements to a public park, cleaning up a streamside area, or establishing a community vegetable garden. All are to be commended for their efforts.

"We congratulate our 2012 recipients on their achievements to date, and are pleased to honor them through our Ripple Effect Scholarship program," Norton said. "We hope that their desire to have a positive impact on the environment is something they carry with them as they move into the next phase of their academic careers, and beyond."

Kentucky American Water established the Ripple Effect Scholarship program in 2002. High school seniors in the company's 10-county service area are eligible to apply. Since 2002, the company has awarded a total of $43,500 to 71 Kentucky students.
