Wounded KC man charged in incident involving off-duty KC police officer
Nov 19, 2012 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A 20-year-old man allegedly wounded Saturday by an off-duty Kansas City police officer was charged today with a robbery that led to the incident.
Jermaine Green of Kansas City also was charged with armed criminal action in connection with the incident outside a home in the 6100 block of North Mercier Street in Kansas City, North.
According to court records, Green demanded money and a cell phone from a man shortly after he pulled his vehicle in a garage. The victim gave Green his cell phone and $40.
A witness inside the residence saw the robbery unfold and quickly grabbed a handgun and alerted her husband, an off-duty Kansas City police officer.
The 27-year-old officer, a two-year department veteran, rushed outside and confronted Green. The two exchanged shots as Green fled in an unknown direction.
The officer and the robbery victim were unharmed. Police released an alert with a description of the robber.
They later learned that Green was being treated at Truman Medical Center for several gunshot wounds to his lower body.
Green told investigators that he was shot by a man in a black, four-door sedan while he was near 31st Street and Troost Avenue. The investigators recovered Green's clothes and a cell phone, court records stated.
Detectives later went back to hospital to interview Green a second time. Green denied owning a cell phone. The detectives went to police headquarters and dialed the number of the victim's cell phone twice. Both times, the phone they had recovered from Green rang, according to court records.
The off-duty officer is on paid administrative leave, which is routine in all officer-involved shootings.
