Alcatel-Lucent unveils strategy for software-defined networks in the enterprise space; CandIT Media first vendor to implement company's approach to SDN in theenterprise space

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Paris -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE:ALU) is to introduce new technologies to meet demand for so-called'software-defined networks', the growing enterprise market trend being fuelledby an increasingly mobile workforce and network management challenges broughton by the 'growing virtualization within data centers.

Software-defined networking gives enterprises the ability to programnetworks and control the traffic flow, inspection and modification ofapplications on them. By building greater programmability, applicationawareness and end-to-end visibility into its Application Fluent Network , Alcatel-Lucent is delivering an enterprise-scale Software Defined Network (SDN) that moves beyond offeringbasic awareness of the applications running on it, to a network that can makeautomatic real-time adjustments.

Alcatel-Lucent's application fluent approach to SDN extends to the entireenterprise network, going beyond basic network configuration to create a betteruser experience. This approach gives mid-sized and large enterprises highlyautomated and simple to use solutions that are scalable and compatible withexisting networks.

Mark Fabbi. Vice President, Distinguished Analyst, Gartner said: "Thefocus for early SDN related use cases has been primarily on automation toremove the need for the human middleware required for network reconfigurationrelated to adds, moves and changes of virtual machine deployments. However, greater benefits will appear as new SDN applications focused onend-user experience and operational improvements deliver on the promise of theapplication fluent corporate network." CandIT Media, an industry-leading digital media solutions company based inBelgium, is the first vendor to validate Alcatel-Lucent's application fluentapproach to enterprise scale SDN. CandIT Media provides proprietary digitalmedia production solutions that meet massive data storage and real-time filetransfer requirements. By using Alcatel-Lucent's OmniSwitch 6900 , it has created a "content aware" digital network thatdynamically supports the large traffic peaks specific to media flows. Inaddition to providing a higher quality user experience, CandIT Media candeliver solutions to its customers at lower costs since the network is moreefficient in transporting large files.

Luc Andries , CTO, CandITMedia, said: "The high volumes of media traffic we deal with have a burstynature that makes Ethernet switches suboptimal for their transport. By usingoff the shelf hardware and Alcatel-Lucent's OminSwitch 6900, we were able toachieve and significantly improve Quality of Service by optimally tuning thetransfer of media content which also resulted in a much higher utilization ofphysical components." Alcatel-Lucent SDN strategy for enterprises extended by VMwarecertification Alcatel-Lucent's OmniVista 2500 Virtual Machine Manager is now classified asVMware Ready(TM), which is an important element in providing increasedprogrammability for delivering on SDN. Alcatel-Lucent's OmniVista 2500 VirtualMachine Manager provides real-time and historical visibility of the enterprisedata center network and the location of virtual components, such as virtualmachines, within the network. This visibility of both the network and virtualapplications coupled with the ability to provision and manage resources, enables the network to automatically make adjustments in response to changes invirtualized workloads within and between data centers.

The Alcatel-Lucent Application Fluent Network and its enterprise SDNenhancements Alcatel-Lucent's Application Fluent Network technology automatically adjustsand optimizes an entire corporate IT infrastructure to ensure it can seamlesslysupport real-time applications running on a local area network, data centersand across the wide area network. This automation is essential to businesses ofany size to meet the challenges of delivering virtualized, mission-criticalapplications securely to employees over a high performance network - no matterwhere workers are accessing these applications.

Built on the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch platform, the Application FluentNetwork detectsvirtualized applications and applies a profile-driven policy to enable anetwork to automatically adjust to virtualized traffic, such as virtualdesktops, in order to meet service quality demands. The solution can combineindividual user policies, the type of device and applications being used, withthe knowledge of the entire network to dynamically adjust network accesspriority and bandwidth allocation, ensuring required service levels aremet.

Alcatel-Lucent will enhance further the Application Fluent Network duringthe first half of 2013 via: - Increased programmability through a set of RESTful interfaces thatenable applications, external controllers and orchestration platforms such asOpenStack and CloudStack to talk with Alcatel-Lucent's OmniSwitch forgreater orchestration and optimization of application delivery.

- Greater network recognition of applications through application profiling, and new application performance analysis of virtual machine connectivityto understand and react to network conditions on applications inreal-time.

- Enhanced global control view through the addition of Plug-N-Playcapabilities that allow each device in the network to be identified and broughtinto service automatically for improved decision making at the network nodelevel.
