Goodwill Recycles 20 Million Pounds of Goods to Create Jobs in 2012

BALTIMORE, Jan. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Through Goodwill, the public can donate, recycle and change lives Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake collected approximately 20,000,000 pounds of clothing and household goods in 2012. Most were sold in its 27 retail stores. Unsold items are sold as salvage keeping millions of pounds out of landfills. Revenue from donated goods enabled Goodwill to provide job training and placement services to more than 25,815 people in need of assistance because of physical, mental or other social barriers. Additionally, 2,464 people were placed into jobs and are on the road to self-sufficiency. Goodwill is dependent upon public support in order to continue its mission.

Goodwill aggressively recycles items that do not sell in stores through its Recycling Center to ensure that as much as possible is kept out of local landfills. In 2012, Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. recycled: -- 1,345,520 pounds of books -- 390,186 pounds of cardboard -- 10,505,866 pounds of clothing -- 159,815 pounds of handbags -- 521,732 pounds of linens -- 867,680 pounds of scrap metal -- 427,018 pounds of shoes -- 633,082 pounds of computer equipment -- Approximately 6,000,000 pounds sold in stores Furthermore, Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. is a Dell Reconnect partner, meaning that consumers are offered free recycling for any brand of computer equipment in any condition. Goodwill also recycles all types of books through their resale online, in its 27 area retail stores or to third-party book buyers.

Through the sale of donated goods, Goodwill generates opportunities for those in need to secure and retain employment by providing job training, placement services and other community-based programs. These programs are available to adults and youth who have disabilities, criminal backgrounds, lack education or job experience or are facing employment challenges.
