Madison Schools getting $50,000 after district resident wins FirstEnergy contest
Jan 29, 2013 (The News-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Madison Schools have received $50,000 from FirstEnergy after a resident entered a contest, also earning himself $25,000.
Ben Holt entered the Thanks a Million giveaway for a chance to win the cash prize as well as a lower electric generation price for between four and seven years.
A total of eight businesses and residents across Ohio each won cash prizes, as well as the school district that the individual winners live in.
Holt moved into the district last fall and entered the contest on a whim, said high school Assistant Principal Colleen Triana.
The donation was a surprise to the district when Holt found out he had won, she added.
Part of the funds will be used to create a cyber cafe that the high school students and district staff have been brainstorming for about a year.
"We're really excited about the opportunity," Triana said. "(The project) kind of came to a stop because it got to the point where now we need(ed) the funds to be able to do this."
The cyber cafe will create a space for high school students to use in their free time to work on homework or group projects.
Time before and after school, lunch periods or study halls can be spent using district laptops or iPads and a wireless Internet connection, Triana said.
The additional funds have students thinking ahead.
One idea that has been brought to the table is the addition of a projector in the cafe to allow groups to practice presentations.
"(Superintendent Roger J. Goudy's) idea is to mimic that same kind of environment," Triana said referencing a coffee shop. "Get the kids moving into the technology but also at the same time, getting them a little taste of what it would be like in college, and the freedom and responsibility that comes with that environment."
