Pearson Congratulates Huntsville Schools Chief on Prestigious Awards for Tech Leadership in Education

The Huntsville City Schools' superintendent won eSchool News' 2013 Tech-Savvy Superintendent of the Year Award and Tech & Learning's Tech Leader of the Year Award for his leadership in successfully moving the entire school district to 1-to-1 learning as part of a major effort to improve student achievement and better prepare students for college and careers.

With his focus on rigorous, research-based curriculum for students supported by intensive professional development for teachers, Dr. Wardynski was named a "Tech Savvy Superintendent" by eSchool News on February 1, 2013.

"Research shows that technology can support more effective teaching and learning, but only when used effectively," said Dennis Pierce, editor-in-chief of eSchool News. "And that starts at the very top, with strong school district leadership. If you begin with a clear vision, and you make sure your staff are well-trained and supported, and you seek to transform instruction instead of layering technology on top of old practices, then technology really can empower education. And that's what the winners of our annual Tech-Savvy Superintendent Awards are doing." Huntsville City Schools this year swapped textbooks for interactive, digital curriculum on laptops and tablet devices--completely replacing the instructional curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade. Schools were connected with robust internet networks, and WiFi was installed in school buses and expanded in public areas throughout the city.

"In just one year, Huntsville City Schools completely transformed education for its nearly 25,000 students. And the district owes it all to the plan put forth by a brave and visionary leader, Superintendent Casey Wardynski," Tech & Learning reported. "Today, teachers use interactive texts, videos, animations, and other tools from digital instructional programs. Best of all, Huntsville is already seeing positive results from this digital revolution. Teacher reports and school records show students more engaged and interested in learning, and suspensions are down 56% from last year." Huntsville City Schools works with Pearson in applying a research-based 1-to-1 learning framework for the shift to the comprehensive digital learning environment.

"Dr. Wardynski's vision and unflagging commitment to providing a world-class education for all of Huntsville's children are clear," said Scott Drossos, senior vice president for Pearson 1:1 Learning. "It's remarkable to see the transformation in each of Huntsville schools in just 100 days. Today, when touring Huntsville schools, the pervasive student engagement, digital instructional practices and use of student achievement data are evident everywhere."
