Smart Grid Product of the Year Awards Winners

Yesterday, the winners of our first Product of the Year, or “POTY,” awards were announced on TMCnet. These awards are a long-standing element of TMC’s (News - Alert) flagship ITEXPO event, and are one of the ways we are differentiating the Smart Grid Summit from other industry events. As outlined in the press release, the winners were ADTRAN, Control4, EnerNOC, Gemalto, nlyte Software, SmartSynch, Synapse Wireless, Telvent, Trilliant (News - Alert) and Tropos Networks.

I’ll briefly touch on each of these, and will further highlight specific companies and their smart grid offerings in upcoming articles.

ADTRAN: this was for their OPTI-6100 series of multi-service provisioning platforms – particularly modules that support the IEEE (News - Alert) 1613 standard for communications equipment used in utility substations.

Control4: their energy management system is an integral piece of the smart home by connecting the smart meter to the smart thermostat, and tying that together with a HAN-based touchscreen energy controller.

EnerNOC: the first of two awards is MBCx – monitoring-based commissioning energy efficiency solution, which identifies and prioritizes various ways for building to optimize their energy consumption.

EnerNOC: their second POTY award is PowerTrak, a Web-based tracking service that provides real time data to help companies manage their Demand Response programs.

Gemalto: this Dutch-based company is a global leader in digital security, and is recognized for their mobile solution MASSIM – M2M Anti-Stealing SIM. The application is particularly valuable for utilities in protecting the data on their meters, and ensuring it does not become misappropriated to other devices or locations.

nlyte Software: their latest data center performance management, or “DCPM,” release, 5.2 addresses data center monitoring tools that are especially relevant to energy consumption and better managing their carbon footprint.

SmartSynch: GridRouter is the particular solution for their award, and as the name implies, serves as a communications hub for utilities in much the same way an intelligent router functions in a data network.

Synapse Wireless: version 2.2 of their SNAP protocol solution provides utilities with a cost-effective, low power wireless mesh network to support smart grid build outs and AMI deployments.

Telvent: based in Spain, this company serves many markets with SCADA systems, including energy in the form of smart grid solution, or “SGS,” suite.

Trilliant: another company with mesh technology, their SecureMesh Network supports AMI deployments, and enables utilities to effectively monitor demand response and time of use programs.

Tropos Networks: GridCom is their architecture for distribution area networks, and being both standards and IP-based, allows utilities to support Smart Grid applications from the core network through to HANs in the home.
