IEEE Communications Society, a community comprised of a diverse group of industry professionals with a common interest in advancing all communications technologies, has taken an increasingly noticeable interest in smart grid. About a year ago, in March 2010, IEEE (News - Alert) issued a comprehensive collection of feature articles on smart grid in its special issue, “Smart Grid: Putting it All Together.” In addition, IEEE has hosted several conferences globally, focusing on smart grid. Now, the IEEE for its International Conference on Smart Grid Communications (SmartGridComm) has issued a “Call for Papers” with a deadline set for April 4.
This will be the second annual SmartGridComm, which is planned to be held in Oct 17 – 20, in Brussels, Belgium. All interested researchers, industry professionals and government officials are urged to visit the conference site for specific submission details.
IEEE, dedicated to exchanging novel ideas, exploring the latest enabling technologies, discussing innovative designs and sharing field experiences related to the full range of smart grid communications, urges interested parties to submit original contributions on symposia topics that include:
- Architectures and Models for the Smart Grid
- Smart Grid Network and Service Management
- Wide-Area Monitoring, Control and Protection – WAMPAC
- The Whole Picture: Sense, Communicate, Compute, Control
- Communication Networks for Smart Grid
- Cyber and Physical Security and Privacy
- Smart/Virtual Metering, Demand Response, Dynamic Pricing
- Interconnections and Communications of Electric Vehicles and Smart Grids
- Virtual Power Plants, Distributed Generation, Microgrids, Renewables and Storage
- Standardization, Interoperability and Coexistence and Regulation
- Getting Practical: Field trials, Deployments, and Lessons Learnt
It appears IEEE isn’t alone in exploring the general public’s novel ideas and innovations in the pursuit for smart grid acceptance and growth. In November 2010, General Electric announced the winners of the first round of their Ecomagination Challenge. They announced this initiative back in July 2010, with the intent to drive smart grid innovation via a $200 million pool of seed capital.
Furthermore, while IEEE is carrying smart grid conferencing across seas, TMC (News - Alert) recently held its Smart Grid Summit, in Miami, Fla., Feb. 2 – 4. The one message conveyed there was the sheer diversity of what smart grid covers. As TMC’s Smart Grid Contributor, Jon Arnold (News - Alert), said, “We could easily build a whole conference around solar energy – and an even bigger one around renewable energy. I can say the same about many other topics, such as electric vehicles, demand response programs, grid security, smart home applications, rural smart grid opportunities, wireless networking, personal privacy, customer service challenges, new business models, etc.” There was a lot to offer in those three days; aside from panels, there was a strong mix of keynote speakers. Dr. Massoud Amin was one of the esteemed guests, talking about the challenges utilities face in modernizing their networks. Widely regarded as the “father of smart grid,” Dr. Amin spoke from a distinct position of authority, and we were very pleased to have him in attendance. Jaclyn Allard is a TMCnet copy editor.
