GE Extends Reach in Ireland by Expanding Smart Grid Portfolio

GE announced its finalization to acquire the Ireland-based FMC-Tech, a leading provider of smart grid technology equipment, giving real-time power line monitoring ability that would benefit customers in Ireland, as well as around the world. This acquisition, initially announced in May, scripts one more milestone in GE’s commitment to smart grid excellence, as well as its assurance to smart grid expansion in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In a release, Keith Redfearn, general manager of Digital Energy for GE Energy in Europe, said: “GE is committed to innovatively solving our customers’ toughest challenges with more efficient, reliable and sustainable energy solutions. FMC-Tech solutions are at the forefront of a new wave of technologies allowing utilities to remain competitive and capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century grid.”

FMC Tech comes to GE with value know-how and backing. For the pilot trials of their intelligent network sensors, ESB Networks worked with the FMC-Tech team. According to ESB, the installed system has proven to be very effective in the region of network monitoring and fault detection, bringing a substantial decrease in outage duration.

By supporting Smart Grid Ireland (SGI), GE has also established its commitment to smart grid development in Ireland. SGI is a cluster of local and international businesses assisted by the Center for Competitiveness, focused on expressing the benefits of smart grid to encourage sustainability and financial growth.

In March, GE’s Paddy Turnbull took part in SGI’s smart grid pilot suggestion to Northern Ireland’s Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Arlene Foster. The pilot would allocate for a superior number of renewable energy sources such as wind, wave and solar energy, to be linked to the prevalent electrical network, thus reducing carbon emissions and guaranteeing energy security and dependability.

An advanced technology, services and finance company, GE is taking on the globe’s tough challenges. Committed to improvement in energy, health, transportation and infrastructure, GE operates in more than one-hundred countries and employs about 300,000 people all over the world. GE also serves the power sector by providing expertise and service solutions that are based on commitment to excellence and innovation.

The company continues to provide new technology solutions and develops through strategic acquisitions to reinforce its local presence and better serve clientele around the world. The businesses that comprise GE Energy- GE Power & Water, GE Energy Services and GE Oil & Gas- work collectively with more than 90,000 employees worldwide, to provide integrated product and service solutions in all areas of the energy industry. These include coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear energy, renewable resources such as wind, water, solar and biogas, and other unconventional fuels and new grid modernization technologies to meet the energy needs of the 21st century.
