Siemens Technology Conforms to International Smart Grid Standards

Siemens (News - Alert) Energy, a supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions, claimed that its range of power control systems and protection equipment, substation automation systems and Ethernet switches are capable of satisfying every requirement specified in the international standards IEC (News - Alert) 61968 and IEC 61850 in the framework of future smart grid solutions.

The IEC 61968 standard defines interfaces for all the major elements of an interface architecture for Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and are to be implemented with middleware services that broker messages among applications. The IEC 61850 standard has been defined in cooperation with manufacturers and users to create a uniform, future-proof basis for the protection, communication and control of substations.

Siemens Energy asserted that its smarter utility solutions were put to test at the Paris, France power utility EDF by the users’ association UCA to check their compliance with the abovementioned standards. Siemens’ network control systems was tested for data interchange capability in compliance with the power distribution management standard IEC 61968. Meanwhile, an interoperability test was conducted on the company’s energy automation products for checking their compliance over the IEC 61850 standard.

Officials with the company remarked that their solutions passing these tests meant that those solutions can be seamlessly integrated into systems comprising of products made by other manufacturers without posing any interface problems. To be able to offer technology and solutions with a global future, they have always been closely involved in the most important standardization bodies and play a pioneer role in setting the latest standards.

Siemens Energy claimed that it is the only integrated energy infrastructure company covering the entire energy conversion chain and is capable of delivering intelligent, trendsetting answers to the increasingly complex challenges the energy business faces. Solutions for building and extending intelligent power supply networks (smart grids) are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio.
