A new flavor of nanotechnology called grapheme has a lot of very bright people very excited. In fact, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology just opened the Center for Graphene Devices and Systems MIT (News - Alert) researchers and industrial partners work on the science and engineering of graphene-based technologies – including such smart grid applications as energy generation and sensing.
But one of the really hot spots for graphene could easily be energy storage. In 2008, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin announced what they described as a breakthrough: They were able to develop a graphene-based ultracapacitor.
