Kosciusko REMC, a cooperative electric utility based in Warsaw, Indiana, has selected Landis+Gyr for advanced metering project.
Officials with Landis+Gyr said that Kosciusko REMC will deploy Gridstream RF advanced metering solution for its smart grid infrastructure project that will begin installation in early 2012.
Landis+Gyr's Gridstream RF network technology provides an intelligent communication link across the distribution network. It uses a highly versatile and proven radio mesh network to communicate with meters, in-premise devices and distribution automation equipment.
As part of the pact, Kosciusko REMC plans to deploy Gridstream RF mesh network technology, E350 FOCUS AX-SD residential meters and E650 S4e commercial meters to all of its member customers over an 18-month period beginning early next year.
In addition to collecting interval meter data for billing and system management, the utility plans to use the system to enhance consumer programs and operations.
"When it comes to preparing for current and future initiatives, we like to be on the leading edge with a proven technology," said Steve Rhodes, president and CEO of Kosciusko REMC, in a statement.
“Gridstream will provide access to information and the ability to remotely manage the distribution system in ways that will help us enhance customer service, lower costs and improve overall efficiency," said Rhodes.
Once the installation of the meters and network is complete, Kosciusko REMC members will benefit from improved outage notification, confirmed operation of load management devices, and access to metering data through an online portal, Rhodes added.
"Kosciusko REMC wanted a future-ready platform for smart grid management engineered to accommodate their changing needs over time. In addition to providing two-way communications with a wide range of metering and distribution devices, Gridstream applications deliver proven benefits for utility customer service and operations departments, along with the built-in ability to add new technology as it becomes available,” said Dave Connaker, vice president of sales, at Landis+Gyr.
Connaker said that the company looks forward to working with the staff at Kosciusko REMC to realize their smart grid objectives.
