Ventyx Adds Model-Based Volt/VAR Optimization into Network Manager DMS V5.3

Optimization of electric energy distribution systems is a topic generating huge interest and emphasis globally, as the world is facing serious environmental crisis due to the ever growing need of energy. volt/VAR Optimization is one of the advanced mechanisms that are being deployed by electric grids throughout the world, as it offers enhanced reduction in overall energy loss that is incurred during its transmission from the power plants to the homes.

Ventyx, an ABB company that offers enterprise software, energy markets data and professional services to various energy, utility, communications and other asset-intensive organizations, has announced that the latest version of its Ventyx Network Manager Distribution Management System will be equipped with model-based volt/VAR optimization as a commercially available application. With the new development, users will be able to enhance the efficiency and reliability of distribution systems.

The company provides its customers with a platform that combines Operations Technology or with Information Technology to offer seamlessly integrated software and power automation solution set that can achieve “source-to-socket” market transformation. Its Network Manager DMS is a solution that deploys a single utility software platform to allow the enterprises to carry out distribution management, enhanced monitoring and control, network analysis and outage management. Version 5.3 of the product enables smart grid operations of power distributors, and integrates advanced sensing, capacitor and voltage regulator controllers, two-way communications, geographic information system modeling and mathematical optimization capabilities to ensure competent performance.

“Network Manager DMS 5.3 delivers true, model-based VVO,” commented Oscar Tillberg, vice president and general manager at Ventyx Distribution Operations Solutions. “It is the new way of controlling voltage and reactive power on distribution systems, and it is a significant technological advancement compared to local and script-based centralized controls. There is a strong business case for investing in VVO. As the distribution network changes, the model is changed dynamically to ensure that optimal conditions prevail. The resulting reductions peak demand bring considerable savings, with no impact on the end customer.”

In November 2011, Ventyx announced a new software license contract that will contribute to power distribution for the Lyse Group, an energy and telecommunications company, with systems that optimize the management and monitoring of power generation and transmission. The contract value is approximately $3.5 million. Under the contract, Ventyx will deliver a complete upgrade of the systems for management and monitoring of power generation and distribution. Its Network Manager SCADA Energy & Distribution Management Systems helps cut operating costs and secure power supply.
