Utility Integration Solutions, Inc. (UISOL), an Alstom subsidiary and utility industry systems integration specialist, announced that it has delivered the smart grid architecture to Glendale Water and Power (GWP) and help it realize one of the nation's most progressive, comprehensive smart power programs.
Glendale’s municipal utilities are on their way to embrace smart metering and smart grid. As part of this ongoing process, Glendale sought to implement new technologies and information systems. The municipal utilities recognized that these require complete integration of systems and data to achieve the benefits and goals of smart grid. GWP was looking for a utility specialist that will be able to help it build a system and process to accommodate future changes in technology and applications or in consumer needs. UISOL, which has developed strong expertise in the enterprise-wide distributed energy resources, came as GWP’s best possible choice.
In a press release, UISOL explained that its architecture provides the guidelines, standards and processes for the applications, the data, and the integration associated with Smart Grid. In addition, the architecture also includes a comprehensive security planning. The architecture includes an implementation roadmap over the next five years.
Based o the architecture, GWP plans to unify all current communications through a comprehensive data model, deploy enterprise service bus (ESB) technology to enhance systems integration, strengthen firewalls and security measures, improve efficiency of operational and business functions, and lay the foundation for managing future intelligent utility operations. The enterprise service bus (ESB) technology is expected to speed the integration of the new systems and operations throughout Glendale's water and electric services.
In the next phase of its smart grid project, GWP plans to implement distribution automation and grid optimization. The architecture provided by UISOL is helping the utilities to take the project to the next level.
Earlier this year, UISOl announced partnership with Tendril, an Energy Platform company on a Price Response Demand demonstration project for PJM Interconnection.
The project was aimed at showcasing how Locational Marginal Price paired with distributed intelligence can drive automated residential Demand Response in the home.
In March of this year, France-based designer and manufacturer of products and systems for the energy and transport infrastructure industries, Alstom announced its acquisition of UISOL.
