And so, as with many smart grid recent announcements, another company has revealed a smart grid product.

LumaSense Technologies, a leader of infrared temperature and gas measurement solutions, has released the Luxtron LumaSMART Winding Hotspot temperature monitor.

Brett Sargent, global vice president of Sales for LumaSense, said that the new product is critical to monitor a transformer.

“Using Luxtron's patented Fluoroptic Technology, LumaSMART offers the most flexible platform in the market to perform direct, real-time winding hot spot measurements,” Sargent said.

As a transformer winding hot spot temperature manufacturer, LumaSense has been an industry leader in rugged fiber optic design, providing temperatures to the energy market for over 25 years.

This newest release – the industry’s first smart grid ready winding hotspot temperature monitor builds on the reliability and stability, adding to its WTS (News - Alert)-22 and ThermAsset2 products.

According to Sargent, the winding hot spot directly relates to transformer life, loading capacity of a transformer and predictive maintenance practices for the transformer.

“Customers need the best technology to accurately measure this critical parameter and the LumaSMART offers this,” Sargent said. “Beyond offering better accuracy, the LumaSMART's communication and configuration features allow users to easily integrate this critical information into their automated data and control systems.”

Equipped with a touch screen display, the LumaSMART offers users easy-to-use trending tools, graphics and alarm configurability necessary to customize the LumaSMART product to exactly fit their needs.

And, the smart product allows for a range of connectivity options which simplifies integrating with any SCADA or DCS package in substations.
