Week in Review: What's Hot in Smart Grids

Welcome to the week in review for the smart grid market. Below are some of the top stories that came across the TMCnet news wires this week.

On Monday, Shidan Gouran, co-founder of Intelligent Communications Partners (News - Alert)discussed Lineage Power’s introduction to the smart grid and, specifically, how the company is one of the first to bring the grid to telco infrastructure and data center power management. In addition to discussing Lineage’s role in the smart grid movement and how valuable the company’s offerings are, Gouran sat down with Vito Savino, Lineage’s product development leader, in a brief Q&A to discuss Lineage’s company history, its products and the company’s efforts in the ICT and smart grid industries.

Also on Monday, TMCnet special guest writer, Brendan Herron, Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy at CURRENT Group, LLC, discussed the climate situation in Copenhagen and, more importantly, how this location could play a key role in developing a possible smart grid solution.

Herron discussed early deployments in the smart grid electric distribution network and how they can reduce electric power requirements by three to five percent, as well as the relate carbon without impacting customer service. Additionally, Herron refers to the a report by McKinsey & Company (News - Alert) that discusses what’s expected of smart grids by 2020.

And, on Wednesday, a report by Zpryme, a market research firm, U.S. hardware and software companies should be prepared to capitalize on the smart grid movement. The report discussed how smart grid grants will power an industry that is moving rather quickly of its own accord. And, the smart grid will only help speed up the performance of these companies.

“The major opportunities presented by the development of the smart grid are not just for utilities, power marketers, energy producers, investors and venture capitalists,” Zpryme analysts said. “In 2014, 89.0 percent or $152.3 billion of the global smart grid market is projected to be comprised of devices, hardware, software, and communications equipment.”

That’s the top smart grid news for this week. Check back next week on TMCnet for more breaking news in the smart grid space.
